(WitWave) - As Israel's military campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip extends into its third month, internal divisions within the Israeli government have spilt into the public eye. Tensions reached a peak on Friday, with leading politicians engaging in a public feud following a reportedly heated discussion in a security cabinet meeting regarding the handling of investigations into the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel.
The disagreements have also extended to the post-war plan for Gaza, with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant presenting a vision on Thursday that envisions no Hamas control in the enclave and no presence of Israeli citizens. This plan faced criticism from the country's far-right finance minister, who advocates for a Palestinian exodus from Gaza. The finance minister called for renewed Israeli settlement construction in Gaza and the "voluntary migration" of its civilians.
Critical Humanitarian Situation in Gaza: "Famine Around the Corner"
Amidst the political turmoil, the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached a critical point. According to Martin Griffiths, the United Nations' top emergency relief official, people in Gaza are facing the "highest levels of food insecurity ever recorded." Describing Gaza as a "place of death and despair," Griffiths highlighted the dire conditions faced by hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians living without access to basic necessities in crowded tent camps in southern Gaza.
Satellite images taken on Wednesday and published today vividly depict the extent of the crowding in these camps, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.
Deadly Israeli Airstrikes Add to the Toll
The military conflict continues to take a toll on Gaza's civilian population. Several Israeli airstrikes on Khan Younis in southern Gaza on Friday resulted in at least 12 casualties, as reported by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah. In addition, at least 10 Palestinians lost their lives in the area of the Al-Maghazi refugee camp, with a separate airstrike on a house in Deir al-Balah killing three people and leaving seven wounded, according to a doctor at Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.
WitWave - has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment on these airstrikes, reflecting the ongoing complexity of the situation on the ground.
As the conflict unfolds, the world watches closely, grappling with the humanitarian crisis and the ramifications of internal government divisions on the path to peace in the region.
